An accredited panoramic view, and still one of our favourite spots in London, is Richmond Hill. Perched just above Richmond Riverside, this pretty little view point offers a great view of the city, with rolling greenery leading down to the River Thames, all framed by a sky that turns golden at sunset.
The best thing about Richmond Hill in our opinion is people spotting and taking golden hour pictures of the trees and the meadow. On any given day, you might see couples in tartan jackets sat on a bench enjoying a quiet moment, painters capturing the view on canvas, or a scottie dog chasing its tail down on the fields towards Petersham.
We love to go for a leisurely afternoon date and grab a coffee from one of the many independent cafés nearby ( Hollyhock is our favourite,) and take a slow stroll along the terrace. If you fancy something more indulgent, The Roebuck pub is a local gem and is right next to the broadwalk, offering a prime hilltop spot where you can sip a pint or a glass of wine and chat while soaking in the scenery. A short walk left from the hill can take you to Richmond Park, (which we always recommend,) and you can also turn in the opposite direction and head into the town and meander through the alleyways and down the cobbled streets. You could also walk towards Petersham and head across the meadows if you fancy a long stroll together, which is especially nice when the sun is shining!
Other Nearby highlights: For a post-walk treat, Petersham Nurseries has a glasshouse café with seasonal dishes and boutique crockery and fun house things to buy, while Ham House, a beautifully preserved 17th-century mansion, is like a national trust property and is just a stone’s throw away.
Transport: Richmond Hill is a 10-minute walk from Richmond Station (District Line, Overground, and South Western Railway). Alternatively, hop on the 371 or 65 bus for an easy ride up the hill.
If you’re looking for the perfect romantic day out, with freshly brewed coffee and a whole selection box of countryside walks around you, Richmond Hill is one of our favourite places to visit on a Sunday morning.
